  • Introduction

Angeline Angele Chartrand was born December 15, 1853 in Riversdale, Bruce Co.,Ontario, the daughter of Luc Chartrand and Marguerite Caskanette. Angeline was the 4th child of 12. On November 4, 1871, Angeline married Jospeh Jacob Kroetsch, in Formosa, Bruce Co., Ontario. Joseph Jacob was a shrewd and hard-working business man and was involved with various businesses. He was a member of Ancient Order of United Workmen, Lodge no. 229 (Hoxie) ...this organization was also very 'strong' in Ontario, so JJ could have first joined there, and continued in Hoxie. JJ also was a FreeMason. Per Jane Klassen's Kroetch Family book: "Joseph took over the operation of John Baptist's woolen mill in Formosa, Ontario. He married Angeline Chartrand, daughter of Luc and Margaret Cascagnette Chartrand on November 4, 1871. Joseph and Angeline had 12 children. The first two died as infants in Formosa, the next three were born at Greenock, which was nearby. In 1878 or 1879, Joseph & Angeline removed from Inneskillen to Manitoulin Island, to be closer to Luc and Marguerite Chartrand. Four more children were born there. About 1886, Joseph & his family moved to Plainville, Kansas. Three more children were born in Plainville, KS." Name: Joseph J. The family were very committed to their Catholic faith, and lived about a block from the Catholic church in Plainville. On July 5, Angeline lost her husband to heatstroke. Hutchinson News Monday, July 05, 1897, Hutchinson, Kansas "Fatal Case of Sunstroke: Belleville, Ill., July 4; J.J. • Ethnicity & Family History

Angeline was primarily of French descent - a descendant of one of the "Daughters of the King" and a French soldier homesteading in Canada - and was born in Canada. Her family had been in Canada since the 1640s and she moved with her (of German descent) husband to the U.S. (Kansas) after she was married.
  • Nationality & Locations

Riversdale, Bruce Co.,Ontario but moved to the Kansas with her husband and children in the early 1890's

    Catholic
  • Military Service

No, she didn't serve in the military
  • Professional Career

Until her husband J.J. died in his early 40s, Angeline was a mother and wife. (He died on a return trip home - he stopped to help a friend who was shocking wheat and he died of sunstroke. His grave is at home in Plainville, KS) Somewhat unusual for the time, JJ left a fairly large insurance policy. Angeline remained in Kansas for quite some time (my grandfather, Hollis, lived with her when he was young) but she staked some of her sons in a logging operation in Idaho, which I believe is still in the hands of some of the family. A devout Catholic, Angeline moved to Spokane Washington in her later years and was the housekeeper for the priests of Gonzaga University in Spokane. When she died, she left the balance of her estate to the University. I believe she is buried on the grounds of Gonzaga.

My name is Janet Nelson. I am the great granddaughter of Joseph J. Kroetch and Helena Claire Crane. Joseph J. is son of Angeline Chartrand and Joseph J. Kroetch. I have done a little genealogy on the Kroetches, and have a book written by a cousin in Washington about the Kroetches in Bavaria, and their imigration to the US and Canada.

Sorry again, Lori. This is my great-great-grandmother. She was born a Chartrand in Canada. She married my great-great-grandfather (Kroetch or Kroetsch, he use both) and, being a good Catholic woman, never married after he died when they both were in their 40s. Pam Marks is my sister.
