Catherine Adelia (Baker) Wills 1867 - 1951

Catherine Adelia (Baker) Wills of Melbourne, Victoria Australia was born on August 22, 1867 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania United States to Annie (Barry) Baker-Shead and Benjamin Baker. She married John Wills, and had children Thomas John Charles Wills, Kathleen Adelia Baker Wills, Florence Bertha (Wills) Mowforth, Joseph Edward Wills, Frances Annie (Wills) Nicholas, Marion Elizabeth Wills, Annie Constance (Wills) Crossan, John Benjamin Wills, Charles Wilfred Wills, Agnes Winifred (Wills) Hearn, and Honor Margaret (Wills) Ellis. Catherine Wills died at age 84 years old on October 10, 1951 in Brighton, VIC Australia, and was buried at St. Kilda Cemetery in Victoria.

    Catherine was born in 1867 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Benjamin Baker and Annie (Barry)- In the 1850 Census of Pennsylvania it states that- ( Benjamin Baker was born in Nova Scotia abt 1821, On his death cert. it states he was born in Nova Scotia and died May 7 1867 ( accidental drowning. ) Annie then married Joseph Shead a baker from Essex, England. Catherine and her family sailed to New Zealand on the Steamship Stad Haarlem in 1879. from Plymouth, England. She became a teacher in New Zealand before coming to Australia around 1889. She married John Wills on the 27th of December 1893 in Balaclava, Melbourne, Victoria. The Age, Melbourne, January 1894. MARRIAGES. WILLS - BAKER.- On the 27th December, at Holy Trinity Church, Balaclava, by the Rev. Dr. Torrance, John Wills, Bulga, Gippsland, to Catherine Adelia Baker, only surviving daughter of Benj. Baker, of Philadelphia, Penna, U.S.A., stepdaughter of Joseph Shead, late of Christchurch, N.Z., now in St. Kilda. ( George W. Torrance, was the first vicar at Holy Trinity Church, Balaclava (1878 to 1895), he was born in Dublin in 1835, and came to Australia in 1869, he and his wife returned to Ireland in 1897, he died in the library of the St. Canice Cathedral, Kilkenny, Ireland in 1907. Catherine and John lived in Balook ( Bulga ) near Yarram in East Gippsland before moving to Elwood. Her brother Richard Joye Baker was a lighthouse keeper along the Victorian coast he married Honora (Norah) Curtis who's parents came from County Clare, Ireland. After Norah passed away, he married Clara Lear, from Portland, Victoria. In 1891- Women's Suffrage Petition sought that 'women should vote on equal terms with men' in parliamentary elections. Both Annie and Catherine's signatures are on the roll, with nearly 30,000 other womens signatures. Mrs. A. Shead, Moore street, St. Kilda Kate Baker, Moore street, St. Kilda Some of Catherine's children became teachers. Kathleen Adelia, Frances and her husband Ivan, Joseph and his wife Mollie. In 1915 Bulga School was renamed Balook. 1918- In the recent departmental examination at the Balook school the following pupils passed the qualifying exam:- Jean Wills, Agnes Wills and Honor Wills, while Marion Wills gained the Merit certificate. 1924 Electoral Roll. WILLS. - On October 10, at Brighton, Catherine Adelia Wills, dearly beloved wife of the late John, and loving mother of Thomas ( deceased ), Kathleen, Bertha (Mrs Mowforth), Joseph, Frances ( Mrs. Nicholas ), Anne ( Mrs. Crossan ), Marion ( deceased ), John, Charles ( deceased ), Agnes ( Mrs Hearn ) and Honor ( Mrs Ellis ). The Funeral of the late Mrs CATHERINE ADELIA WILLS of 483 St.Kilda street, Elwood will leave St. Bede's Church, Ormond rd. Elwood, for the St.Kilda Cemetery, Oct 17th.
