In June, 1942, the 99th joined 2 other squads to form the all black 332nd Fighter Group. West Point Graduate, Capt. Benjamin O. Davis, Jr. (later General) wasthe commanding officer for the 99th Fighter Squadron and later the 332nd Fighter Group.
They were later called the "Tuskegee Airmen". The 332nd later painted the tails of their P-47's red so were nicknamed the "Red Tails". ... show more
