The 1940s

The 1940's - a decade of hard work See more...

Coming out of the Great Depression, the world faced another challenge in the 1940's: World War II. Although the war began in the 1930's, it expanded and gained in ferocity (and atrocities) in the 1940's. At the end of the decade, soldiers returned home and the Greatest Generation began creating the Baby Boomer generation.

A photo of an unknown woman. I don't know who she is, but I thought she was fascinating. I am using her image as the main character in a story I'm writing. I call her "Brenda." I got the image from a collection of mixed photographs.

This is an early photo of Mr Riley B. King (1925 - 2015) described as a blues singer, song writer, and guitarist - but better described as legend. B.B. King (his stage name) was born in Mississippi on a cotton plantation near the town of Itta Bena. His parents were sharecroppers. His recording career began with his first single in 1949. It took a couple of years for him to catch on, but when he did, a legend was born. He was married twice and had between 11 and 15 children. At the time of his death, on May 14th, 2015, he was living in Las Vegas. You could say "the thrill is gone" but his music and his guitar, Luciille, will be with us forever. Thank you, B.B!

Definitely a Hollywood actor, probably in the 30s or 40s. See my next photo for him in a car on the set with some of my family members and other actors.

A photo of Lt Werner Bauer - December 8, 1941. This photo was taken the day after the attack at Pearl Harbor. Lt. Werner Bauer (USNR) was aboard the battleship USS West Virginia when she was hit. Another officer flooded the compartments opposite the torpedo hits, allowing the West Virginia to settle to the bottom upright. Werner lead a team into the black below the waterline to flood her ammunition bunkers. He survived with mere cuts and bruises. Somewhere he found a naval officer's hat to get this picture taken of him while still in his hospital gown. He was eager to let his family back in Missouri know he was safe. Ironically, his cousin, Rudolph Bauer, was a bomber pilot with the Luftwaffe. One brother immigrated, the other did not.

A photo of Rita Hayworth campaigning for the recycling of scrap metal in World War Two. A large part of the home front war effort in World War Two was saving scrap metal that could be recycled into weapons for the war (also used for ships and aircraft). The caption on this photo from the National Archives says that Rita Hayworth "sacrificed her bumpers for the duration" (of the war). Rita Hayworth was a big movie star at the time and she also helped sell war bonds - her two younger brothers were both in the War. Most of Hollywood was involved in the war effort, either through promoting home front campaigns such as Victory Gardens, buying war bonds, rationing, or collecting scrap metal, or by service in the War overseas. Margarita Carmen Cansino was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1918. She changed her name to Rita Hayworth for the stage and eventually was named one of the top 25 female motion picture stars of all time. Married and divorced 5 times (once to Orson Wells), her life was plagued with alcoholism. Later in life, she was diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimer's and died at the age of 68 in 1987.
