Celeste Holm, Cinderella's Fairy Godmother
Celeste Holm, best known to baby boomers as the Fairy Godmother in the 1965 "Cinderella" televison production, was born on April 29, 1917 and died on July 15, 2012 at the age of 95, just like Ernest Borgnine who died a week before.
Celeste was a star of television, movies (remember her as Frank Sinatra's love interest in "High Society"?), and stage. She won an Academy Award for "Gentleman's Agreement" in 1947 and was also nominated for Oscars for "Come to the Stable" in 1949 and "All About Eve" in 1950. She was even knighted by King Olav of Norway!
Although she was born in New York City (an only child), she traveled extensively because her father (Theodor Holm) was a Norwegian businessman. Her mother, Jean Parke, was an American author and portrait artist. She went to school not only in the United States but also in Holland and France.
Her career began in 1937 on the stage and continued until her death. She was active in her personal life as well, having five husbands (Ralph Nelson, Francis Emerson Harding Davies, A. Schuyler Dunning, Wesley Addy, and Frank Basile), marrying her last husband at the age of 87. She had one son with her first husband and another son with her third.
Singer and actress on stage, television and movies, with a career spanning decades, Celeste Holm was one talented lady!
