Elizabeth Hughes, Diabetes Pioneer
Elizabeth Hughes Gossett was diagnosed with diabetes in 1919, at the age of 11. She was treated through diet/nutrition, which meant a very low calorie diet.
By the age of 14, she weighed 52 pounds and her health was deteriorating quickly. Her mother contacted a Canadian doctor, Frederick Banting, and he began giving her insulin shots.
She took insulin the rest of her life: She graduated from college, married, had 3 children, and died from pneumonia at age 73. The insulin treatment allowed her to have a full and busy life.
