John Hughes Holmes (b1832 in Kentucky) & Clarissa Laine left Jones Co, Iowa in 1864, crossing the Plains by covered wagon in 4 mos & 14 days. He homesteaded in Sailor's Ravine in 1870. Ellen Holmes Hawk & Carl, Cora, Alma, Clarissa, & John, with little Harry, Emery, and Ira Holmes. There was a frame inside with the names & birthdates of all the children and where they were born. John T. Holmes died in 1872 at age 12 and Lawrence died in 1888 at 25. The ox yokes and wagon were still in the barn that they came to California in.
