Julia Ward Howe (born Julia Ward May 27, 1819) wrote "The Battle Hymn of the Republic". She was an abolitionist and while she wrote the words for the anthem, she used the music of the song "John Brown's Body". It was a popular Union song in the Civil War.

She was a abolitionist, social activist, suffragist, poet, and a member of the Society of American Friends of Russian Freedom (SAFRF).

Julia Ward Howe died at the age of 91 in 1910. This photo was taken about 1.5 years before she died.
