Julia Ward Howe - Battle Hymn of the Republic
Julia Ward Howe (born Julia Ward May 27, 1819) wrote "The Battle Hymn of the Republic". She was an abolitionist and while she wrote the words for the anthem, she used the music of the song "John Brown's Body". It was a popular Union song in the Civil War.
She was a abolitionist, social activist, suffragist, poet, and a member of the Society of American Friends of Russian Freedom (SAFRF).
