After Ragnar Sigurdsson landed in France in 845 he headed towards England. When he landed in Northumbria in 865 on the northeast coast of England, he was defeated in battle for the first and last time by King Aelle of Northumbria. Ellaâs men captured Ragnar, and the King ordered him thrown into a pit filled with poisonous snakes.
