Telegraph Avenue, Berkeley CA, 1969
On Telegraph Avenue, Berkeley during the People's Park protest. The police (who were at the time called "The Blue Meanies" because of their blue jump suits, in a reference to the Beatles' Yellow Submarine movie) started shooting, killing a student (James Rector) and blinding another.

I was near there, in my dorm room a couple of blocks away. Luckily, I wasn't walking down Telegraph at the time - this was near Sather Gate, the entrance to the University. It was a scary, demoralizing time. It shocked us that police would fire upon American citizens.
