i. Vernon Bruce Dent was born on Feb 16 1895 in San Jose California. He died on Nov 5 1963 in Hollywood California. The cause of death was Heart Attack. He was buried on Nov 8 1963 in Forest Lawn Memorial Park,Hollywood Hills California.

Vernon Bruce Dent was born on February 16, 1895
in San Jose, California and educated there and in
Oakland, California. Before entering motion
pictures in 1919, he was an accomplished song
writer. Familiar to many as the frustrated cop,
businessman or landlord in countless Three
Stooges shorts, Vernon Dent got his start in show
business as a member of a singing troupe
traveling in Southern California in the early 1920s.

Silent comedian Hank Mann, a member of the
famed Keystone Kops, was impressed by Dent's
girth (250 pounds) and comic know-how, helped
Vernon enter films in 1919. . Mann thought that
Dent was good comic material, and gave him a
supporting part in a series of two-reel comedies
he was making called "Folly Comedies" for the
independent Pacific Film Company in 1921-22. In
the early '20s, Dent was good enough to be given
his own series of comedy shorts.
After this series was over, Dent freelanced and
worked for such top comics as Larry Semon. He
found real niche when he was hired by Mack
Sennett, and spent most of the rest of the 1920s
at that studio. For such a large man (5'9" and 250
pounds), Dent was surprisingly graceful, and
Sennett was enthused to discover that Dent could
do some outstanding physical comedy, able to do
a pratfall with the best of them. Dent really came
into his own in Sennett's Harry Langdon series,
which rocketed Langdon to stardom and brought
recognition to Dent also. When Langdon left
Sennett, Dent stayed and supported such Sennett
comics as Billy Bevan and Ralph Graves. Dent and
Langdon were reunited in a series of shorts for
Educational Pictures in the early '30s, and his
value in the series was such that Langdon insisted
Dent always receive second billing after him.
When Langdon moved to Columbia Pictures in
1934, Dent followed, remaining a mainstay of the
Columbia 2-reel stock company until 1953. Here
he was featured with such comic luminaries as
Andy Clyde, Buster Keaton, Hugh Herbert, Vera
Vague, and especially the Three Stooges. Among
Dent's dozens of talkie feature-film credits were W.
C. Fields' Million Dollar Legs (1932) and You're
Telling Me (1934); in one of his rare feature
starring roles, Dent played a boisterous, wife-
beating sailor in the 1932 "B" Dragnet Patrol.
Vernon Dent was in more Three Stooges episodes
than any other supporting character. He was in 56
films, not including any remakes. Vernon Dent had
no real trademark role. He played just about every
type of person possible, from a cop to a chef.
There was no character Dent could not play. He
played roles both supporting and opposing the
stooges. He was in stooges episodes from 1936-
1954. Dent worked especially well with Shemp
Howard of the Three Stooges, and the two
remained lifelong friends.
Shortly after retiring in the mid-'50s, Dent

supplemented his acting income by running the
concession stand at Westlake Park. Vernon Dent
retired in the mid-1950s, due to total blindness
brought about by diabetes; the ever-upbeat actor
was so well-adjusted to his handicap that many of
Dent's close friends were unaware that he was
blind. Vernon Dent died on November 5, 1963 in
Hollywood, California. Although there were rumors
that Dent died because he was a Christian
Scientist and refused to take insulin, in an
interview several years later Vernon Dent's wife
stated that he was not a Christian Scientist, and
died from a sudden, massive heart attack.

At Wenona, Nov. 18, of consumption of the bowels, Enoch Dent, aged 76.
Another Old Settler Gone - The Index announces the death of another old settler, Father Enoch Dent of Wenona, who died on Monday of last week, aged 76. He was first taken sick about the time of the Wenona fair, supposed at that time to be lung fever, but from which he has not recovered, a complication of diseases setting in, finally resulting in his death.

Father Dent was born In Monongalia county, W. Va., May 21, 1796. He married in April 1817, Miss Judith Gapen of Pennsylvania, who has been his companion upwards of 55 years. By this union 12 children were born to them, five only of whom survive the father. In 1820 he moved into the wilds of Indiana, and in October 1832, into Marshall County, during the Black Hawk war, in which he took active part. He has lived about 40 years near where he died.

Few persons were better known in this community. In person, he was commanding and dignified. His constitution was powerful. His manners were peculiarly kind and genial. His sense of honor was fine. He was a kind husband and an affectionate father. The funeral was large. His wife, three years his junior, will soon follow him.

John O. Dent, administrator of the estate of Enoch Dent, deceased, finalreport; report approved and administrator discharged.
James B. Dent was put to school at an early day, and after acquiring a fair knowledge of the English branches, he entered Judson College, remaining here for two y ears. Upon starting out in life for himself he accepted aposition as salesman in a wholesale house of Chicago, filling this position for two years; later was in business in Galena, where he remained also two years, and afterward spent some time in Cairo.

In 1861, he enlisted in Company A, First Illinois Calvary, and wascommissioned second lieutenant, but at the end of one year he joined theFourteenth Illinois and was made captain of Company C. When mustered out of service was major of his regiment. he was in the battles of Lexington,Buffington's Island, Knoxville, Cumberland Gap, and was in all the battles from Dalton to Atlanta, and during his war career was three times captured, once at Lexington, in 1861 and again in 1864, while with Stoneman on his raid on Macon, and was put under fire of his own batteries at Charleston, S.C., but remained uninjured. When captured the third time he was on a train going from Charleston to Cincinnati, and was taken back and put in Libby prison. After being held in this dungeon for two months was exchanged.

In the fall of 1865 he came to Arkansas and located in Woodruff County where he met friends and decided to permanently locate. Although his finances were at a very low he bought a farm, and he is now one of the largest real estate owners in the county, his lands amounting to about 5,000 acres, 2,500 of which were wild land, and the remainder of very fertile soil.

He officiated as county assessor in 1874, and for three terms held the position of county and probate judge. In 1888 he was elected on theDemocrat ticket to the State legislature, and is now filling the duties of that position in a manner highly satisfactory to his townsmen who honored him with their votes. He was a delegate to the NationalConvention that nominated Cleveland for the presidency, which met in St.Louis. he was one of the men who defended Gov. Baxter and replaced him in office, acting as lieutenant from Augusta during the Brooks-Baxtertrouble. During the Ku-Klux and militia times he fearlessly expressed his opinion, defended himself against both parties and assisted in protect ing his neighbors from the depredations of these lawless men.

The Major is a whole-souled and honorable man, and is ever ready to defend his country, friend or neighbor. he has taken the degree of KnightTemplar in the order of Mason, and takes great pride in his lodge.

The beginning of the trouble was the desire of Perry Christian and his companions: John Lewis, Robert Walters, John Perkins, and C.E.Chamberlain to wreak vengeance on a negro named Frisco who sought safety in the home of George W. Dent's son-in-law, Charley Gates. Three of the gang attacked the house and battered down the door. G.W. Dent and Charley Gates were working in a field when they were in formed of the attack and started for the scene. When they reached the Gate's house, G.W. Dent ordered the men to leave. Lewis, Walters and Perkins met Dent and Gates and a fight brokeout between the men. G.W. Dent - a 46 year old man- and his son-in-law,got the upper hand on the men. Perry Christian appeared on the scene, for the first time, coming out of the Gate's home. He held a revolver in one hand and a whiskey bottle in the other. He fired four shots at Dent, two which went true to the human target, one hit Dent in his chest. Dent took a step back, reached his right arm out, and moved towards Perry Christian. Christian fired his revolver, hitting Dent between the eyes.Dent staggered for a moment and fell to the ground - dead. This account is from the March 28, 1901,Fayette County, West Virginia, newspaper
From: College of Arms, Queen Victoria Street, London, E.C.4.
For: Mrs. R. C. Naylor,
Subject: Pedigree of Peter Dent 1684.
Date: 29 August, 1969.
A careful search in the official records of The College of Arms did not reveal a Yorkshire pedigree of Dent, but one was found in the 1684 Vistation of co. Cambridge (K.7, page 20) which was attested by a Peter Dent, whose family came from Yorkshire.
As there were no other pedigrees of a family of this name which mentioned a Peter of Yorkshire, I imagined that this was the required pedigree and have abstracted it.
It begins with James Dent of Ormesby, near Gisborough, co. York, who came from the town of Dent in the West Riding.
His son Peter of Ormesby, died circa 1642, leaving a son Peter of Gisborough. He married Margaret, daughter of John circa 1674, leaving four sons, viz: (1) William, who was of Sunderland, co. Durham in 1684, (2) Peter, of Cambridge (see below) (3) Thomas, who died in Maryland in the west Indies where he left unspecified issue and (4) George of Gisborough, who was living unmarried in 1664.
Peter, the second son, who attested the pedigree, was aged 55 in 1684. He was married to Elizabeth, daughter of John Pleys of Little Eversden, co. Cambridge, Clerk, descended from Devon. They had three sons, Pierce (aged about 21 in 1684), William (aged 19), and John (aged 10) and three daughters, Margaret, Mrs. Henry Nelson of Linton, co. Kent, Elizabeth, Mrs. William Allot of Cambridge and Deborah, unmarried.
The following arms have been drawn beside the pedigree:
Argent on a Bend Sable three Lozenges Ermine (a cresent for difference).
Beneath the arms is this note: "These Arms found in a Book of Coats formerly belonging to Clarenceux Caroden and Mr Nic Charles Lancaster now penees H. St. G Mil. Clarenceux pag 65. as belonging to Dent of Newcastle upon Tyne."
This reference is that the family used, but could not establish a right to the arms. As there are no further records of his family, if a descendant wished to bear arms, he would have to submit his case to the kings of arms for judgement. If they descided that the arms put forward in 1684 were genuine and appertained to the family, they would issue a certificate to this effect. If they found that the claim foundered for want of proof, then a new grant of arms would be necessary
Thomas Dent was the high
Sheriff of St. Marys Co. Maryland 1664 and was one of the Justices Of the
County Court and a delegate for St. Marys Co. 1669.
