William served in the Civil War (enlisting on 23 Oct 1861) and entered as a private in the Union Army in the 12th Infantry. He achieved the rank of corporal on Sept 1, 1864 and died shortly after the war (in Talladega Alabama) . Although he and his family lived in New York, he was buried in Marietta, Georgia near where he died.
