William's parents were Cornelius V Steers (1810 - 1881) and Margaret M Corl (1821 - 1870). William was born in New York and he had siblings Cornelius, John, Charles, William, Jennie, Sarah, Charles, Caroline, Adelia, and Lewis.
In the 1860 federal census, William (16) was living in Honey Creek, Delaware, Iowa with his family and was attending school. Also in the household were father Cornelius (50), brother Cornelius (19), and siblings John, Ann, Caroline, Sarah, Adelia, Lewis, and Margaret. Father Cornelius said that his occupation was a blacksmith.
William served in the Civil War (enlisting on 23 Oct 1861) and entered as a private in the Union Army in the 12th Infantry. He achieved the rank of corporal on Sept 1, 1864 and died shortly after the war (in Talladega Alabama) . Although he and his family lived in New York, he was buried in Marietta, Georgia near where he died.
