Dennis Stratton
Dennis Lee Stratton was born to Monty "Gander" Franklin Pierce Stratton Sr. (1912 - 1982) and Ethel Ester (Milberger) Stratton (1916 - 2006). His father was born in Texas and his mother was born in Kansas. He had one brother: Monty F Stratton Jr (1937 - 2012). Father Monty was a pitcher for the Chicago White Sox who lost a leg in a hunting accident. A popular movie about his courageous struggle to return to professional baseball, starring Jimmy Stewart and June Allyson, was made in 1949. Dennis Stratton married Jean Johnson on December 10, 1960, in Greenville, Hunt County, Texas. They had two daughters. Dennis was found dead in the kitchen of his home by his wife, Jean. There was a 12 gauge shotgun lying beside him. A comprehensive investigation ensued, most probably because of the fame of his father, Monty. A judge ruled Dennis' death a suicide. On his death certificate, his death was described as being due to "careless handling of a gun." It was a "self-inflicted, accidentally, gunshot wound." For a full contemporaneous explanation of the investigation into Dennis' death, read Gunshot Wound Accidental, Ruling States. Ironically, Dennis' father, Monty Stratton, a major league baseball pitcher, had lost his leg in a hunting accident (shooting) in the 1930's. You can read more about his father and his fascinating life here: Monty "Gander" Franklin Pierce Stratton Sr..
Monty F Stratton Jr
Monty Stratton Jr. was the son of professional baseball pitcher, Monty "Gander" Franklin Pierce Stratton Sr. (1912-1982) who was best known for the five years he pitched for the White Sox, from 1934-1938. While still a pitcher, Monty Sr. lost a leg in a hunting accident and became the subject of a 1949 movie "The Monty Stratton Story" in which the elder Stratton was portrayed by actor Jimmy Stewart. Wearing a prosthetic leg, Stratton played in the minor leagues from 1946 to 1953. Monty Jr's mother was Ethel Ester (Milberger) Stratton, 1916 - 2006. His only sibling, Dennis Stratton, died at the age of 23 in 1964. Monty Jr and his wife, Patricia Maytas, who he married in 1957, had 3 children: Monty III, Susan, and Donna Kay. One of the photos in "memories" (Monty Stratton Jr Family) is from a July 26, 1969 St. Louis Post Dispatch newspaper article in which the Stratton family is told to get rid of their 6 ducks. The ducks were Easter presents for the 3 children and Monty Jr was said to show the pluck of his famous father by fighting the order. Monty Jr had this to say about his father: “I was with my father the last week of his life,” said Monty Jr., who worked several years for McDonnell Douglas Corporation in St. Louis. “He knew what was going on. He had no fear. One night he said he hoped that in lieu of flowers or some other remembrance, perhaps some memorial could be enshrined, maybe at a children’s hospital. He thought it might serve as an inspiration to some youngster fearing a dismal future because of a loss of an arm or leg.” To learn about Monty’s father, see : Monty "Gander" Franklin Pierce Stratton Sr. Monty Jr. was a veteran of the United States Air Force. His rank was "A2C". And A2C in the Air Force is the second lowest enlisted rank in the US Air Force. Later, he worked for McDonnell Douglas Corporation in St. Louis
Monty "Gander" Franklin Pierce Stratton Sr.
While hunting rabbits on his farm in 1938, Monty fell and his shotgun discharged, shooting him in his leg. As a consequence, his right leg was amputated. He was fitted with a wooden leg and returned to the White Sox as a coach and batting practice pitcher. Monty tried to enlist in World War 2 but was rejected because of his wooden leg. He continued to practice pitching - with his wife, Ethel - and was able to play on several minor league teams. A movie about him was made in 1949 - The Stratton Story, starring Jimmy Stewart as Monty and June Allyson as Ethel. Ethel died in 2006. Go to Monty Stratton: Baseball's version of profile in courage to read a comprehensive article about his life, which includes details about his family and the making of the movie about his life.

Roy Olin Stratton
SACO - The Rice Paddy Navy by Roy Olin Stratton liked it 3.00 · Rating details · 1 rating · 1 review SACO - The Rice Paddy Navy is the story of the Sino-American Cooperative Organization (SACO), otherwise known as the U.S. Navy Group China, and its exploits against Japanese forces occupying China during World War II. In this book, Roy Stratton records first hand accounts of soldiers, sailors and Marines who served in China, often behind enemy lines, to train, equip, advise and assist the Nationalist Chinese forces of Chiang Kai-Shek. Many are familiar with the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) and their operations in the European and Pacific theaters. But SACO's achievements are less well-known but no less impressive. This Navy unit that never numbered more than 3000 men effectively tied down tens of thousands of Japanese forces in China and inflicted casualties many times their number. This account is not an overly scholarly treatment but is a collection of accounts provided by SACO members themselves. The voices heard in the book are those of the men who conducted these operations. The reader can hear in them the tenor of another era when the whole world was at war and so many Americans put their lives on hold to preserve American liberty. (less)
