Karren Wilson My mother, Mamie Herma, was born March 27, 1924. Her parents were John and Katherine Herma. The Herma family came to the United States from Poland. According to the 1930 census, the Herma family resided in Gary Indiana. There were 8 children.. Sarah, John Jr.,Teddie, Tony, Stella, Ercie, Mamie, and Henry. According to the census report my grandfather John worked as a laborer in the steel mill. My grandmother Katherine was a home maker and the oldest daughter Sarah worked as a hotel maid. I must skip a big part of my story because my mothers family "disowned" her after she married my father who was African American. They married around 1940. My aunt Estella or Stella as she was called did continue to stay in touch with my mom. I have a letter that she wrote to my mom before I was born. Anyway i have been searching for my mother's side of the family for many years. They can't possibly still hate African Americans can they? My mother, Mamie passed away February 15th 1954, I was 7 months old. My mom and dad together had 5 children, 4 sons and 1 daughter, me. I was told that after having 4 sons my mom had wanted a little girl so much that she would go to Saint Monica Church every morning and pray that God would bless her with a daughter. My mom was 29 at the time of her death. She died from stomach cancer. I have her picture hanging in my bedroom and I look at her and wish that i could have known her. I look forward to seeing her in paradise.
