2020 marks 20 years since the inception of AncientFaces. We are the same team who began this community so long ago. Over the years it feels, at least to us, that our family has expanded to include so many. Thank you!

Jonathan Winters as "Maude Frickert" one of his many hilarious characters.

Jonathan Harshman Winters III was born November 11, 1925 in Dayton Ohio. While his grandfather had owned a bank and his father was an investment banker, like many families of the era the Great Depression of the 1930's decimated the family's fortunes. His parents separated and he and his mother moved to Springfield Ohio to live with his grandmother.

After serving in the Marines in World War 2, he went on to study cartooning and met his wife (married until her death in 2009), Eileen Schauder. They had two children.

After leaving the art career he was pursuing and entering radio, Jonathan broke into television and movies, becoming one of the most famous comedians of his day. His comedic characters ranged from Maude Frickert (shown) to impersonating the voice of President John Kennedy on the Jack Paar show. Another generation of television watchers knew him as "Mearth" the son of the title characters on "Mork and Mindy." He was a comedic hero of Robin Williams.

Jonathan died on April 11, 2013 at the age of 87 in Montecito, California. He brought a lot of laughter and joy to generations of Americans and will be sorely missed.

This was taken after my graduation from bootcamp. It's bittersweet in that its one of the last photos taken of the entire family. My sister was murdered just a month later...

The Unsinkable Molly Brown - RMS Titanic
Margaret "Molly" (or "Maggie") Brown, born July 18th, 1867 and died October 26th, 1932, receiving an award for her efforts to save the other passengers of the RMS Titanic.

Molly Brown was a wealthy philanthropist and socialite who was aboard the RMS Titanic when it sank in 1912. She was fortunate (read: wealthy) enough to get aboard one of the only 20 lifeboats prior to the ship sinking. However, unlike so many other survivors, Molly Brown urged the crew of Lifeboat No. 6 to return to the wreckage to pick up drowning passengers.

Molly Brown, known to her friends as "Maggie", came from hard working roots. Her parents were Irish immigrants and she moved to Colorado when she was a teenager, where she worked in a store. It was there that she met and married her husband, J.J. Brown. This is what she said of their meeting:

"I wanted a rich man, but I loved Jim Brown. I thought about how I wanted comfort for my father and how I had determined to stay single until a man presented himself who could give to the tired old man the things I longed for him. Jim was as poor as we were, and had no better chance in life. I struggled hard with myself in those days. I loved Jim, but he was poor. Finally, I decided that I'd be better off with a poor man whom I loved than with a wealthy one whose money had attracted me. So I married Jim Brown."

After Jim discovered a rich vein of silver, the family became wealthy - fulfilling her dreams of marrying a rich man and enabling her to carry out her many acts of philanthropy.

Mary Webb Nicholson, World War II Vet
Mary Webb Nicholson, World War II Vet
Mary Webb Nicholson was instrumental in helping Jacqueline Cochran set up a group of American women pilots to ferry airplanes for the Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA) in England during World War II. She herself was thrilled to join the last group of women pilots who went over to participate in the war effort. After initial flight training in Canada, Mary traveled by barge with several other women pilots to England. She was stationed at Maidenhead, in Berkshire, England. In May of 1943, shortly after being promoted to Second Officer, Mary was ferrying a Miles Master when, due to mechanical difficulties, the propeller flew off her plane over Worcestershire County. In poor weather conditions, she made an emergency landing in a farm field. Unable to avoid hitting a farm building, Mary's plane crashed and burst into flames. A nearby farmer attempted, unsuccessfully, to rescue her. Mary was the only American woman in the ATA to lose her life in the war.
