Abner Sharpless was born on November 18, 1913 in Jacksonville, North Carolina, USA to parents James J Sharpless (1877-1957) and Nellie Sharpless (1890-1960). He had siblings Tom, John H, Mary L, Alonza, Caesar, James, Peachy, Jim, William Mckinley, and Edward Sharpless. On November 21, 1936 he married Verta Mac Pearson (born 1914) in Onslow, North Carolina, USA and he moved to Washington DC shortly after and the couple later separated. He then enlisted into the US Military on March 18, 1941 in Baltimore Maryland and served as a private from March 18, 1941 until May 8, 1943. On March 13, 1944 he married Mattie Francis Deaver (1920-2004) in Onslow, North Carolina, USA and they had multiple children together before divorcing on July 22, 1975.
