Court case in Hotham (Nth.Melbourne) October 1864. - INQUEST. COMMITAL OF A MIDWIFE FOR MANSLAUGHTER. A coroner's inquest was held at Hotham, yesterday, on the body of Emily Drysdale, who died on the 16th aged 32 leaving six children. Deceased had been drinking and quarrelling with her husband. Anne Carroll, aged 70 was placed in the dock charged with the manslaughter of Emily Drysdale. James Drysdale, a boy aged nine years, stated that the prisoner and a Mrs.Bitten were with his mother when she was taken ill. Before her confinement to her bed (which was on the floor) the deceased drank about a nobbler of hot gin. Mr.Gillespie, surgeon proved after examination of the body of the deceased, the umbilical cord had been ruptured from the placenta. The non-removal of the placenta was the immediate cause of the haemorrhage. Anne Carrol was acquitted by a jury.
