Charlie was kind of a drifter, until he met Ruby Handley. They married in 1939, had a son the same year, and lived in Chicago, IL. Charlie’s mom died when he was a young boy. He had several siblings, older and younger than him. His father did not really take care of the kids. Charlie was put in “Foster Care”, which was basically free labor for farm families. He struck out on his own at about the age of 14. He did logging, mining, and any other job he found. After marrying Ruby, they moved to Bloomington, IL, where she was from, and had lots of family. They went on to have six children total.
Ruby died from COPD complications in 1975, before her 56th birthday.
Charlie died in 1993, with heart complications.
