Charles Edwin Kerler Jr. was born on March 8, 1912 in Brooklyn, Kings, New York, USA to parents Charles Edwin Kerler Sr (1885-1950) and Margaret McLaughlin (1892-1980). He had sisters Rita Marie Kerler (1913-1986) and Joan Helen Kerler (1922-2012). He grew up and lived in New York City mostly residing in Brooklyn. On August 20, 1936 Charles married Helen Wilson (1916-1998) in New York City, New York, USA. The couple had three children together including a son named Brin Edwin Kerler (1943-2016). The family lived in the Bronx. Charles Kerler registered for military service on October 16, 1940, and was employed by Stromberg Time Corp. At the time of registration, he was 28 years old. He then enlisted in the Army on September 2, 1943, in New York City. He held the rank of Private in the Selectees (enlisted men) and served in the military branch without a specific assignment. He was discharged on February 24, 1946.
