Charlie James Banister was born on August 17, 1924 in Louisa, Virginia, USA to parents Samuel James Banister (1891-1980) and Mary Elizabeth White (1906-1962). He grew up in Falls, Fayette, West Virginia with siblings Frank Banister (1918-1989), Adel Banister (1925-2017), and Carry Lee Banister (1928-2019).
At the age of 18, he registered for the draft on December 14, 1942, in Glen Ferris, Fayette, West Virginia. On June 18, 1943, Charlie enlisted in the United States Army in Huntington, West Virginia. Upon enlisting, he was listed as "No Branch Assignment," indicating that he had not been designated to a specific branch of the military at the time of enlistment.
As a Private, Charlie was classified as one of the Selectees, indicating that he was chosen for military service through the selective service process, which included both drafted individuals and volunteers during World War II. Charlie served in the military for approximately one year and five months before being discharged on November 1, 1944.
