Chapter 8 the Palmer’s The Palmers have taken up a great deal of my research because they were a family of unknown relations. I was given some information regarding the earlier descendants but only a small amount of knowledge of ascendants. We will start with Thomas Palmer who was married to Mary Ann Jones from Montgomeryshire, Wales. He was from Canvey Island although the family were from Writtle near Chelmsford and moved onto Shoebury before moving to the Island. They had two children in the area William and Elizabeth before moving to Gravesend when they had my Great Grandmother Ellen Charlotte Palmer in 1866. The mystery begins here as I have been unable to find a Birth Certificate for her although she was baptised on 2nd May 1966 at St Georges Church with her address at West Street and her father’s occupation being a fisherman. Ellen had an illegitimate child in 1882 named Mabel Mary Palmer born at Princes Street who in turn had two illegitimate children Wallace Cyril Palmer 1897 and Clarence Vickers Palmer 1902. With thanks to the Salvation Army Heritage I have been able to piece together some of the history of Mabel. She was brought up by her Grandparents in Gravesend when Ellen married . In 1897 the first of the children was born at 65 Quebec Road, Tilbury but entered the Gravesend Union Workhouse about five weeks later with her son. Both were discharged early 1898 but readmitted again a month later. She left leaving her child behind having joined the Salvation Army. In July of that year Wallace was discharged to the Sanatorium with Scarlet Fever. He survived being readmitted once again to the Workhouse in 1899. In the meantime Mabel had entered Service at Sandown, Isle of Wight. After returning to Lanark House a refuge for young girls, towards the end of 1899 she returned to Service with Mrs Howell at Clapham. In 1901 she was in Service with Mrs Hobbs at Hackney. In the same year Wallace was transferred to Cottage Homes now named as Cyril. In 1902 she gave birth to a second Child at the Infirmary. In 1902 she went to the “Nest”, next door to Mrs Howell, a home for sexually abused girls. She left in 1903 for a position with Mrs Eldridge while her child went to a nursing mother at Penge. This is probably the last she saw her two sons in England before going to Australia. Whether this had anything to do with Ellen Charlotte Mitchell’s (Palmer) suicide in 1902 is not known but is coincidental with the timing. She sailed for Australia aboard the SS Wakool in 1908 arriving in September. Also a passenger was William Albert Gowing who she later marries in 1909 at Sydney NSW having no other children. The Australian Electoral Rolls throw up some interesting information. There are three for 1930 and d two in 1933 but only two are significant at this stage the others to be dealt with later. In 1930 they were living at 31 Dutruc Street, Randwick East and 1936 sees them at 11a Dutruc Street, Randwick.! In 1949 Mabel died at the Prince Henry Hospital, Little Bay with a residential address the same as the 1933 Electoral Roll. She died of a Celebral Haemorrhage and Hypertension Her Death Certificate throws up another mystery with her parentage of her father being William Thomas Palmer and mother Charlotte Rice. Is it possible that she was the daughter of William 1850 but brought up by the elder brother Thomas? Although the early lives of her two illegitimate children have been dealt with they became a large part of my research. I will deal with Wallace Cyril Palmer first . We know he was left at the Gravesend and Milton Workhouse and was transferred to the Cottage Homes in 1901. Nothing is known of his life at the Cottage Homes but it seems to have been a much better environment than the Workhouse. He proved difficult to find until the publication of the 1911 census when we find him as an inmate in the Training Ship “Exmouth” berthed at Grays aged 14 and with the name Walter. It is understandable that he may have had the nickname Wally and assumed the name of Walter. The ship trained boys from the workhouses for the Navy or the Merchant Navy which turned out to be his chosen profession. He went under the name Cyril Palmer but the evidence is shown clearly in the photo. There is a lot of information identifying him as the correct person i.e. date and place of birth, and new information regarding his appearance. But the strongest evidence is his next of kin being his Grandfather Mr Palmer at the Alms Houses at Gravesend. This begs the question as to if he knew his family and when. Although there are small gaps in his record from 1918 until 1941 he was at sea for the majority of the time. We know now that he sailed and met his younger brother in 1922 when they were both crew on the SS Gaspar. This is the only known time when their paths crossed. Cyril was torpedoes off the south coast while a crew member on the San Tirso in 1939 but survived only to be torpedoed on a return journey from Newfoundland in 1941. The ship was in a convoy and called the Fircrest carrying iron ore to the Tyne. The ship sunk immediately with all hands and is a site of the CWGC. There is a memorial Plaque at Tower Hill, Plaque 49 naming all crew members who went down with the ship His younger brother was named Clarence Vickers Palmer who after his mother had left him was adopted. Again this caused problems but was eventually found in the 1911 census living with the Wallen family at Scunthorpe. He is on the form as adopted. About 1916 he was informed that he had been adopted a decided to run away from home to join the Merchant Navy. As he was only 13 at the time he had to lie about his age. This obviously came to light and his ID was cancelled but he came back and with a new ID began his career. On Christmas Day 1922 he married Amelia Agnes Beale at Grays Parish Church and had one son born living at 42 Maidstone Road, Grays in 1923, the son being named after his father. The old saying that a sailor has a girl in every port is probably true of Clarence. Clarence set sail with the SS Barabool bound for Australia via Cape Town. The ship was quarantined for a few months due to a number of passengers contracting a mild form of smallpox. A passenger names Mary Ann Webster Booth was a passenger on the same ship and they had a relationship resulting in the birth of a daughter in 1927. His is not an issue until in 1929 his wife Amelia died and Clarence then decides to emigrate to Australia leaving his son behind to be brought up by the Outen family. Amelia’s mother had married Joseph Outen in 1907 As mentioned earlier the 1930 Australian Electoral Rolls show Clarence and Mary living with William and Mabel Gowing at 9 Athol Street, Coogee, NSW and in the same year Clarence and Mary were living at 2 Bedford Street, Earlwood, NSW. In 1933 they were living together at Cobar Paddock, Lithgow. She was sporting the surname Palmer but there is no evidence to support that they ever married. The relationship could not have lasted much longer as she returned to Scotland. Clarence married in 1935 to Violet Burton at St Andrews Church, Lakemba, NSW. Checks were made before the wedding to establish that Clarence was not married and therefore would not be B bigamously married. The following information is the result of me placing a request in a column of the Sydney Herald for anybody being related to Clarence to contact me by e mail. To my surprise I received replies from his son and daughter. His son was born 1936 at Sunbury Private Hospital, Milton Street, Ashfield and a daughter Marie Jewel Palmer born 1947 at 25 Anzac Avenue, Colleroy. In 1937 Electoral Roll they were living at 301 Canterbury Road, Lakemba. Between the births WW2 had began and Clarence enlisted in the Australian Army under the name Clarence Victor Palmer i 1940 and was not demobbed until 1947. The 1949 and 1954 Electoral Rolls both had them still living at 25 Anzac Avenue, Colleroy, However in 1959 the marriage ended in divorce when Clarence was caught out having a ex-marital relationship. In 1960 he again marries to Alice May Nurthan now living at 11 Lawrence Street, Fairfield. During this marriage in 1960 he terminated all contact with his children stating that he was finding it difficult to mix his marriages. Living at the same address he died in 1970. I have been privileged to have met Maria and her husband Barry while they were on a European Tour. We met at Gravesend and spent some time searching for areas of interest of the Palmer family The photo shows the Palmer family in Australia 1994 As mentioned Clarence left a son in England when he went to Australia. His son of the same name married Ada Lilian Hodgkins in 1950 and died 1995 at Basildon Hospital
