David Van Cortlandt Crosby was born to Floyd Crosby, who was a cinematographer, and Aliph Van Cortlandt Whitehead, a saleslady at Macy's Department Store. He had older brother Ethan Crosby.
David Crosby had children James Raymond with girlfriend Celia Crawford Ferguson in 1962, Erika Crosby with girlfriend Jackie Guthrie, Donovan Crosby with girlfriend Debbie Donovan, and Django Crosby with wife Jan Dance. He had married Jan Dance in May of 1987 in Hollywood, California.
A founding member of the 1960s - 1970s bands the Byrds and Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, David was also known for his free-wheeling, drug fueled personal life and his outspoken views on politics. Although he wasn't associated with his former bands and their members later in his life, he pursued a solo career until just before he died.
Rock legend Bob Dylan summed up the controversy that was David Crosby this way in his memoir, “Chronicles”: “Crosby was a colorful and unpredictable character, wore a Mandrake the Magician cape, didn’t get along with too many people and had a beautiful voice — an architect of harmony … (He) could freak out a whole city block by himself, but I liked him a lot.”
