David Victor King, who was born in 1945, was adopted in 1945 by Nellie Ruth Pillsbury (died in 1973 at the age of 59) and Donald King, a former captain in the Merchant Marines. He had one younger brother, Stephen Edwin King, the author. He also had a sister, Elaine Schneider.
Because Nellie and Donald had been told that they couldn't have children, they adopted David. Then Nellie became pregnant with Stephen, who was - obviously - a surprise, in 1947. Two years after Stephen was born, and when David was around 4, Donald left the family, never to be seen again. David grew up with a single mother.
David King married Linda Hovey and they had children Karen and Katherine. He later became a tax collector in Milton, New Hampshire and a tax assessor in Somersworth, New Hampshire.

Note: Records differ on David's exact date of birth. His obituary states that he was born on September 14, 1945. Other records give his date of birth as October 23, 1945. The first may be his actual date of birth and the second may be the date of his adoption by the King family.
