He flew B-17s in England and was a Chief Flight Engineer and Top Turret Gunner for 19 missions before being shot down in Belgium. Edward Bettinger married Dorothy T. Gallagher (1925 - 2010) in 1947 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They were married for 63 years, until the death of Edward. Dorothy and Edward had eight children: Barbara, Sharon, Edward James Bettinger Jr., Mary Kay, Jeffrey, Gail, Dori, and Meg. A successful businessman, Edward was a lifelong resident of Pennsylvania who died in Pennsylvania at the age of 85.
