Ernest Alvin Holladay Sr
Ernest Alvin Holladay, Sr., of seven children born to Thomas Corwin and Alice Armena Martin in Hillsboro, Ohio in 1894. Ernest had a twin sister, Doctor Lena Holladay. He spent the bulk of his life working on the family farm. As a youth, as well as an adult. At the age of 25 he is listed as head of the house on the 1920 census. His parents and 3 of his sisters, (Carrie, Edith, Grace), resided with him. His father must have been a forward thinking man, he educated his two youngest, the twins. The story passed along was that his neighbors thought him a bit odd, educating a woman! Ernest attended O.S.U. and after teaching school, entered law school on Sept 1, 1923 at the age of 29! Despite his profession as an attorney for The State of Ohio Industrial Commission, (and living in Columbus); he continued to work on the family farm. His monthly travels always announced in the local paper, The Hillsboro News Herald, and The Press Gazette. By the 1930 census he and his sisters, Grace, and Lena are living in Columbus, Ohio on West 7th Avenue. His sister, Lena practicing medicine and him practicing law. On April 22, 1950 after an 11 year friendship; he married Dorothy Jane Sperry in Detroit, Michigan. This union was blessed with one son, Ernest, Jr. Ernest was 56 when his son was born, again a bit unusual. The family of three continued to make their monthly jaunts to the family farm in Hillsboro; and the papers continue to make those pronouncements in the social section. The house at the farm caught fire from a lighted Christmas Tree and burned to the ground, though the family continued to work the farm; they lived in town thereafter. Lena had her medical practice right in the house. I did not known my father-in-law, but understand he was a quiet man, a frugal man, a man devoted to his family. He was active with The Eastside Business Mens Association of Columbus, and was an elder in his church, The EUB Church on Fifth Avenue. He had a love of history, liked to read the historical markers along the roadways. Making the long trip from Ohio to St. Louis without aid of air conditioning in the car or power steering was surely a feat. His interest on that trip... viewing all that could be viewed about The Dred Scott Case. Being a fairly serious man, laughing; gut laughing out load was not something he did often. An exception to this was during a performance of The Harlem Globe Trotters. He loved them and thought they were hilarious.
