The Leader, Melbourne, Sat 29 December 1917. RAILWAY CROSSING FATALITY. DRIVER AND TWO HORSES KILLED. A PATHETIC SEQUEL. A distressing railway accident, attended with fatal results, occurred near Carrum railway station on Thursday afternoon, resulting in the death of Frank Pynn, 23, widower, living with his parents at 60 Marlborough street, Balaclava. It appears deceased, who was employed as a driver for Messrs. Sharp Bros., cordial manufacturers at South Yarra, was driving a pair of horses attached to a cordial waggon across an open railway crossing from Point Nepean road to Station street, about 100 yards from Carrum railway station. He was evidently watching the up train which was at Carrum station, and failed to see the 4:37 p.m. down train from Melbourne to Frankston approaching. It crashed into the vehicle and carried it about 100 yards along the line. When picked up Pynn was fearfully injured and he died almost immediately. The two horses were killed and the waggon badly damaged. Pynn's body was brought to the City Morgue by Constable Bird, of Chelsea. Mr. W. H. Pynn the father of deceased, was subsequently told that his son had been seriously hurt. Mr. Pynn motored to Carrum, only to find that the body had been taken to the Morgue. During his absence from home Mrs. Mary Pynn, his wife, who was around 60 years of age, died while sitting in a chair in the backyard. She was found in a sitting posture by her daughter-in-law. It is believed she died from the shock occasioned by the news of the accident to her son. The deceased driver's wife died about 2 years ago.
