Francisco Sanches (aka Joseph Daniel Sanches or Jose Francisco Sanches, Junior). Francisco’s parents were from the Canary Islands (this has yet to be verified) and arrived in the United States via New Orleans around 1790. His parents were likely identified as Creoles; that is, they were associated with those born in the West Indies and were likely of Spanish ancestry. In reality, they were “Spanish Cajuns”, Isleños descended from Canary Islanders. Francisco, aka “Frank”, was born about 1802-1808 (or as late as 1814?) in a settlement outside of New Orleans. He entered the Republic of Texas on July 22, 1835 as a single man (a document of the same date claims he was born in Texas). He married Jerusha (pronounced Ja-roo-sa) Louzora Tidwell – a widow with two children – on February 13, 1844 in Nacogdoches County, Texas. This family resided in Navarro County, Texas from 1848 75 until prior to 1860, whereupon they moved to McLennan County, Texas. In 1850, he was making a living rearing Hawks. In 1860, he was raising cattle. He was killed by the Comanche in September 1867 and was buried in 1867 at Camp Wood Army Post Cemetery, Barksdale, Edwards County, Texas. A house has since been laid on top of his grave and his gravestone has been traded or misplaced.
I have yet to confirm a solid link to the Canary Islands; however, it remains a distinct possibility. Among the early arrivals to Saint Bernard Parish from the Canary Islands around 1778 was a “D. Sanchez”. The Canary Islanders Heritage Society of Louisiana recognizes the surname “Sánchez” in its list of surnames of the Canary Islanders who sailed to Louisiana. The name Sanchez appears on a list, hosted by rootsweb, of Canary Islands locales and their associated Louisiana Families; this list places the family name of Sanchez originating from the Island of Tenerife. The people of this island were well known to be skilled in the art of domesticating cattle; this may explain why our Francisco Sanches was so successful with raising cattle, as his father might have taught him this trade.

Francisco Sanches Oseg was born on December 13, 1945, and died at age 46 years old on April 8, 1992. Family, friend, or fan, this family history biography is for you to remember Francisco Sanches Oseg.
