George Alfred Schmidling was born to Walter Edward Schmidling (1898 - 1975) and Eleanore B. Stauber (1902 - 1954). He had siblings Walter Joseph and Mary Magdeline Schmidling.
George served in the United States Navy during World War II.
George Schmidling married Violet Joyce Erickson (1927 - 1994) in 1949. They had three children.
A Waukesha Police Officer, George was a detective and he was the first police officer to be killed in the line of duty in Waukesha. Two of the three burglary suspects that he was taking in for questioning pulled out their guns while riding to the police department with George. (He had previously patted them down but hadn't found the guns.) They succeeded in shooting him twice before he was able to return fire. See Waukesha police detective killed for the full story. He was survived by his wife and three young children.
