Gordon's father was William Carter Massie (1908-1976) and his mother was Jewell O Myers (1908 - 1992). He had siblings Herman (1929- 1976) and Doris (1936 - 2016). When he was 7, Gordon and his family lived in Mason Ohio. The family included his parents, Carter and Jewel, and both siblings. Gordon was in the third grade and his father was a teacher. Gordon married Clara May "Jay" Clagg (1933 - 2021) on September 30th, 1952 in Gallia, Ohio, where his father was Superintendent of Schools of North Gallia School District. The Superintendent was responsible for executing the educational policies, orders, and administrative functions of the board as well as directing the work of all employees who work in the department of education. Gallia is about an hour and a half from Circleville, where Gordon eventually died. Clara and Gordon divorced in 1979 after 26 years of marriage. His Ohio death certificate said that he was divorced at the time of his death in 1996. As an adult, Gordon was a respected educator in his community and he came from a family of educators: not only was his father a Superintendent, but his brother and sister were also teachers and administrators. This was obviously a family that valued education and community. Gordon was a veteran of the Army during the Korean Conflict. having served from 1952 - 1954.
