The Superintendent was responsible for executing the educational policies, orders, and administrative functions of the board as well as directing the work of all employees who work in the department of education. Gallia is about an hour and a half from Circleville, where Gordon eventually died. Clara and Gordon divorced in 1979 after 26 years of marriage. As an adult, Gordon was a respected educator in his community and he came from a family of educators: not only was his father a Superintendent, but his brother and sister were also teachers and administrators. This was obviously a family that valued education and community. Gordon was a veteran of the Army during the Korean Conflict. having served from 1952 - 1954.
