Gustav Harmel was a veteran of World War II and received a Certificate of Merit Award for outstanding performance while on military duty. He served in the European theater as part of the 69th Tank Battalion of the US Army and was a member of the VFW Post 7746 and was in service with the United States Army from March 26, 1942 until his discharge date of October 18, 1945. He married Margaret Hinz on March 3 1956.

Gustav "Gust" Harmel was born on July 16, 1912 to parents Gustav Adolph Harmel (1859-1923) and Juliana Lenz Harmel (1874-1934). He had siblings Olga (1894-1960), William (1896-1967), Henry (1898-1967), Martha (born 1900), Richard George (1903-1993), Alec J (1905-1981), Clara (1907-2003), Bertha (born 1910), Rudolph (1914-1984), and Emma Harmel (1917-2002). He married Avaleene A Gammon (1918-2001) on March 24, 1937 in Washington D.C. and they had sons Robert Jerome (1937-1981), Elbert James, and Thomas Harmel.
