Henry grew up in Beverley on his fathers farms Avon Dale and Emerald Hills. When he was 15 or 16 he accidentally shot his sister Eliza Bartram. For many years Henry went as a shepherd with George Kersley (a great friend of his father James and his grandfather Thomas Williams) to Dumbleyung to graze their sheep. He was secretly engaged to George's daughter Elizabeth Kersley for 15 years before they finally married. James Bartram was opposed to their relationship possibly due to Elizabeth being part Aboriginal on her maternal line. After his marriage he moved with his wife and three eldest children to Wheatfields in Dumbleyung (a Farm on the edge of Lake Dumbleyung). His father-in-law built him the Wheatfields house to live in. Henry became a leading wheat and sheep farmer in Dumbleyung.
