Hewlett Lee Fortenberry Jr is the son of Hewlett Lee Fortenberry Sr (1906-1983) and Elizabeth Vincent Phillips Fortenberry (1908-1974). He was born on January 6, 1927 in Jacksonville, Florida and was an only child. He joined the United States Army on November 20, 1945 and served until May 6, 1947. He then enlisted again (or was drafted) on April 16, 1952 and served until May 31, 1969. Hewlett was married twice in his life. He married Barbara Helen Seymour Fortenberry Askea AKA Maureen Roma Millervindio (1929-2008) on January 7, 1947 in Russell, Alabama. They had children together Katherine Marie (1947-1948) and Roma Lee Fortenberry Lossman Mortimer (1949-2005). The couple divorced in 1954 in Putnam, Florida, USA. He then married Mary Edna Winslett (1921-2015) and they also had children together.
