29 James Mcgaughy Biographies

I never knew my father. I know history though. He was raised in Aledo, IL. He had two brothers, and two sisters. One aunt is still living. His mothers name was Mildred, And hid fathers name was James Thomas McGaughy. He was a WW II veteran, and received a Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and the Croix de Guerre, and palm I am told. I am told he spoke of being awarded 2 Purple Hearts, but never officially received his 2nd. He was also a prisoner of war in the northern occupied territories. The camp was liberated by Russian troops, at which point him and a number of other prisoners went on a perilous, months long journey through farm fields and country side, before reaching France. My Dad was a farmer, an Amway salesman, and a factory worker. He was a foreman at John Deere Foundry in East Moline, IL. He worked there 14 years, and 9 months, dying short of receiving his pension for 15 years of employment. Before entering the U.S. Army in the 1940's, my father worked for John Deere also for approximately 5 years. My Grandfather was on the draft board for Mercer county, and as the story goes my father was the target of many a comment from fellow peers, saying such things as "you'll never get drafted. Your dad's on the draft board.". With this weighing heavy on him he quickly enlisted to the dismay of family. My father is mentioned in an Aledo, Il newspaper, next to a photo of himself in 1945. He, at 6'4" weighing only 98lbs, returned from war, gave thanks to the infantry mans friend Ernie Pyle. He stated he anticipated his return to service. My father is survived by Audrey Jean (Lowe) McGaughy, and 3 of his 4 sons, and 3 step sons.
