Francis was born on 12 Apr 1838 in Ohio to Arza Tyler and Miriam Meachem. He has 5 known siblings: Maryann, Marion E., Sarah, Benjamin Franklin and Henreitta. Frances enlisted as a Private on 28 Aug 1861 at the age of 24 into Company E, 31st Infantry Regiment Ohio. On 24 April 1864 he was transferred to Company I, 31st Infantry Regiment Ohio and munstered out on 19 Sept 1864. Frances served in the same Regiment as his younger brother, Benjamin Franklin Tyler. Frances married Ruth Conklin on 15 Apr 1865 in Morrow County, Ohio. From this marriage came 7 children: James W., Willie E., Truman Murray, Hattie L., Francis Myron, Elnora, and Ruth Agnes. Frances died on 06 Mar 1899 in Dane County, Wisconsin. Cause of death per his death certificate was insanity due to sunstroke and head injury from the Civil War. On this sixth day of September, A.D. one thousand eight hundred and eigthy seven personally appeared before me, clerk of the Circuit Court, a court of record within and for the County and State aforesaid, Francis M Tyler aged 48 years, a resident of the Town of Lime Ridge, county of Sauk, State of Wisconsin, who, being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is the identical Francis M Tyler who was ENROLLED on the 22nd day of August, 1861, in Company E of the 31st Regiment of Ohio bols commanded by Capt David Rose and was honorable DISCHARGED at Atlanta GA on the 19th day of September, 1864; that his personal description is as follows; Age 23 years; height 5 feet 11 1/2 inches; complexion, light; hair, light; eyes, blue. That while a member of the organization aforesaid, in the service and in the line of his duty at River Bridge, in the State of Kentucky on or about the ____ day of November, 1861, he had congestion fever the result of exposure. And at near Bear River, Ala. in June 1862 he received sunstroke. Was unconscious until after sundown. Came up with the co sometime the next day was excused by the doctor and went with the wagon train. At Mission Ridge Nov 1863 was knocked down by the pressure of a solid shot and afterwards was put on light duty. been troubled with his head ever since 12 years ago 2 sores came out of his head. That he was treated in hospitals as follows: was not hospital. was treated by Regimental Surgeon. The results of these attacks & injuries have disqualified him for labor. That he has not been employed in the military or naval service otherwise than as stated above. That since leaving the service this applicant has resided in the town of Lime Ridge in the State of Wisconsin, and his occupation has been that of a farmer. That prior to his entry into the service above named he was a man of good, sound, physical health, being when enrolled a farmer. That he is now totally disabled from obtaining his subsistence by manual labor by reason of his injuries, above described, received in the service of the United States; and he therefore make this declaration for the purpose of being placed on the invalid pension roll of the United States. He hereby appoints, with full power of substitution and revocation, Vival and Scott Washington D his true and lawful attorney to prosecute his claim. That he has not received nor applied for a Pension. That his POST OFFICE address is Lime Ridge county of Sauk, State of Wisconsin. Claiment's signature.
