1 September 1939 to 2 September 1945. World War II. Bombing of Pearl Harbor December 7, 1941, forced the US into the war. This was the day after Jean was born. June 6, 1944: D-Day Normandy landing in France, in which American soldiers and other Allied forces fought to end World War II in Europe. August 15, 1945: Japan surrenders and WWII officially ends. June 25, 1950: Korean War started. 1950's: Invention of electronic computers. 1951: Color TV introduced by CBS. Martin Luther King Jr. led the U.S. Civil Rights Movement from the mid-1950s until his assassination in 1968. 1952, on July 2, Dr. Jonas E. Salk tested the first dead-virus polio vaccine on 43 children. The worst epidemic of polio had broken out that year - in the U.S. there were 58,000 cases reported. Of these, 3,145 people had died and 21,269 were left with mild to disabling paralysis. Nov 22, 1963 John F. Kennedy was assassinated. 1967: First microwave oven introduced to households by Amana. July 20, 1969: One Giant Leap For Mankind. First moon landing. 1989: Public commercial use of the Internet began with the connection of MCI Mail and Compuserve's email capabilities.
