John Dureiko was born on January 31, 1918, in Cleveland, Ohio, to George Dureiko (1891-1972) and Olga Kaminsky Dureiko (1893-1967). He had two siblings, Anthony Dureiko "Tony" (1919-1979) and Olga Dureiko Firman (1925-2001). In the 1940s, John relocated to Detroit, Michigan, where he registered for the World War II Draft on October 16, 1940. Approximately a year later, on September 24, 1941, he enlisted in the United States Army in Detroit, Michigan. Following his enlistment, John was promoted to the rank of Private and served in the Army, becoming a veteran of World War II. John was married to Ann M. Dureiko, and the couple had two sons, John Dureiko Jr. (1950-1989) and Glenn Dureiko.
