John 'Buck' Golovich was born on September 24, 1919 in Doylestown, Wayne, Ohio, USA to parents Joseph Golovich (1883-1948) and Katherine "Katie" Bodanatz (1883-1972). He had siblings Mary, Michael, Ann, Mildred, Sophie, and Louis Paul Golovich. He enlisted on March 22, 1943 in Fort Hayes Columbus Ohio and served for 27 months with the US Army in the European theatre. On November 22, 1947 John married Shirley Jean Heffern (1926-1984) in Detroit, Wayne, Michigan, USA. The couple had three children together and lived in Melvindal, Michigan, USA.

He had many siblings including Joseph Michael, Frank A, Anna Rose, Michael, Katherine, Matthew Ferdinand, and Peter H Golovich. They grew up in Pittsburgh Allegheny, Pennsylvania, USA. He married Mary Bischan on August 9, 1941 in Allegheny, Pennsylvania, USA at the age of 24. A few days after getting married, John enlisted on August 13, 1941 in New Cumberland Pennsylvania. He served as a private and served in the US Army from August 13, 1941 until November 8, 1944.
