I barely knew him. John "Smack" Matheis was my grandfather, but since he had about a dozen children (I don't know how many died as children), and my father was the second youngest, he was already very old when I knew him. "Smack". I don't know why he was called that, but I do know he had a reputation for being very strong, even among the farm community. He left behind a family farm to his descendants. The family was Roman Catholic and had elaborate gatherings for weddings and Christmas. His descendants include Seger, Phelan, Birk, Schott, and Matheis families. There is a definite and unmistakable quality of class, love, and good will towards others in his family, and one must credit this to John and his wife in part. The family is known for a love of life, but not so much so that they don't remember it is only a leg in Eternity. They will play cards all night, go on hunting trips, and the love to laugh and joke. His grandson, Jimmy Phelan, was a notorious comedian of the Cincinnati Ohio region, who was much beloved before passing away. Yet, it was Smack's way to love Jesus and the life in the Eternity even more. He never lost sight of the truth, and though he loved life, he loved Eternity even more.
