John Patrick McAvinue was born on December 10, 1924 in Philadelphia, PA to parents William Louis McAvinue (1892-1967) and Mary E "May" Mullin (1894-1973). He had siblings William Patrick McAvinue (1913-1969), Catherine McAvinue (1915-1984), Leo McAvinue (1918-), Thomas E McAvinue (1920-1984), and James J McAvinue (1926-1967). He registered for the draft in December 1942 when he was 18 years old. At the time, he resided in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and was employed as a student. Approximately seven months after his draft registration, John voluntarily enlisted in the military on July 16, 1943. As an enlisted man, he held the rank of Private.

He was born in New York on August 12, 1927 and had siblingsArthur J McAvinue (1925-2018), Thomas Philip McAvinue (1929-2008), Hannah M. McAvinue (1932-2018), and Jane "Bridget" McAvinue (1934-1993). John enlisted in the United States Army on February 15, 1946. Upon enlisting, John held the rank of Private, the lowest enlisted rank in the Army. His enlistment took place at Fort Dix, New Jersey, and he joined the Air Corps. John served in the military for about a year and two months before being discharged on April 9, 1947. He was married to Ann Margaret Lubrano (1930-1995). Together they had a daughter and a son.
