He was assigned to the 4458th Quartermaster Car & Truck Co. as a Technician 4th Grade. He was discharged from service on August 17, 1945, after serving for four years and five months. John married Josephine Lucille Merkum (1921-2011) on July 20, 1945 in Akron, Ohio. The couple had children Bonnie Jo Sulentich and Phillip Sulentich. John and Josephine later divorced on July 3, 1967. He then re-married on January 4, 1969 to Frances Ruth Miller (1921-2000).
