John Francis Witkoski (later went by John Francis Whitney) was born on December 13, 1916 in Mt. Carmel, Northumberland, Pennsylvania, USA to parents John Enoch Witkoski (1883-1956) and Pelagia "Pearl" Lubiewska (1890-1940). John attended the Bloomsburg State Teachers College (Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, USA) in 1943. In school he was involved in the Business Education Club, Phi Sigma Pi, College Council, Omega Pi, Kappa Delta Pi, Day Men's Association, and many other organizations. At the time of his draft registration on 16th October 1940, he was a 22-year-old white male. The registration place was in Brooklyn, Kings, New York and John's employer was listed as the "Penn R R Co," which stands for the Pennsylvania Railroad Company. William then enlisted in the United States Army on June 20, 1942, at Ft. Jay, Governors Island, New York. At the time of his enlistment, the United States was deeply involved in World War II, and many young men were joining the military to serve their country. William held the rank of Private as part of the "Selectees (Enlisted Men)" group. The term "Selectees" refers to individuals chosen for military service through the Selective Service System during World War II. He eventually rose to the rank of Technical Sergeant (T Sgt) in the United States Army Air Forces. The US Army Air Forces was the aerial warfare service of the United States during World War II, and they played a crucial role in the conflict.
