John was my cousin; however, we never called him John, we called him Pete. When he was a boy, he was a little on the short side, and was nicknamed "Petey." He went by his nickname of Petey until he grew up, and then we called him Pete. As a matter of fact, when I think of him, I only think of Pete, and I even forgot that his real name is John :-)
Although our families lived in the same county, Franklin, we lived several miles apart and since my Mother didn't drive, we didn't see him but maybe once or twice a year.
I have many fond memories of Pete. When we were little, he was the oldest so we all looked up to him. (His two brothers, Rick and Brent, and me and my brother, Chad.) They had a large backyard, and the last half of the yard was not mowed, and it was sort of a jungle and we used to play back there. Petey was always the "monster" chasing us and we had so much fun!!
I loved him very much. He was quiet-spoken and very nice. He was very good-looking and when I was a kid, I always wished he wasn't my cousin because I had a little crush on him (and his brother, Rick). All three boys were very handsome and had no problem getting girls!! :)
When he joined the Army back in 1969 or 1970, I believe, he came over to see us one last time before going to Vietnam. He was quite handsome in his uniform and I was extremely proud of him. My best friend, Kathie Harding, was over and she thought he was very cute, too!
I didn't talk to him much after that, but his personality had changed when he got back from Vietnam. He was very quiet and seemed withdrawn and was drinking a lot. His marriage ended in divorce and he lived in the south end of Columbus.
The last time I saw him, he was over my Aunt Violet's house and my husband and I just happened to stop by to see her. I was so happy to see him and hugged him. He was getting ready to leave and was very quiet and seemed sad. I was very sad because I thought he looked bad: skinny and unkept. That was the last time I saw him.
