Joseph Fomenko is the son of Cano and Annie Fomenko. He was born on May 24, 1918 in Paulsboro, New Jersey, USA and had older siblings Michael and Elizabeth as well as younger siblings Mary, Annie, Alice, and John Fomenko. He later moved to and lived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. Joseph registered for the draft in 1943 at the age of 25. He was 5'8" tall, weighed 150 pounds, had dark complexion, brown hair, and gray eyes. His next of kin was his mother, Anna Fomenko, and he was not employed at the time of his registration. Joseph Fomenko then enlisted in the US Army on July 11, 1944, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was assigned to the Selectees (Enlisted Men) component as a Private and had no prior military experience. During his military service, Joseph Fomenko was not assigned to any specific branch of the military. He was discharged on June 22, 1946, after serving for two years and eleven months.
