Joseph Klieber was born on January 12, 1913 in New York City to parents Edward Klieber and Anna Karl. He had siblings John, Edward Jr, William, Anna Margaret, and Dorothy Patricia Klieber. They grew up in Manhattan and Queens.
He married Beryl Winifred McGill (1916–1995) on December 9, 1939 in New York City.
Joseph worked as an accountant and lived most of his life in New York City, NY. At the age of 27, Joseph registered for military service on October 16, 1940, in Jackson Heights, New York. At the time, he was employed at Bell Telephone Labs.
His military journey continued when he enlisted on June 5, 1943, in New York City, New York. He became part of the Selectees (Enlisted Men) component and was not assigned to a specific branch.
