Joseph Verbin was born on August 12, 1914 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to parents Leizer "Louis" Verofsky (1893-1971) and Bertha Dora Berger (1895-1916). He had a younger sister, Fannie Verofsky.
He registered for the draft on October 16, 1940, when he was 26 years old and on December 3, 1941, Joseph enlisted in the US Army at Fort George G Meade, Maryland, a few days before the attack on Pearl Harbor. During his time in the military, Joseph served as a private and was in service for four years before being discharged on December 28, 1945.
While in service, he married Sylvia Tzirl Perez (1916–2019) on August 12, 1943 (Joseph's 20th birthday) in his hometown of Philadelphia. The couple went on to have two children together, Barbara and Warren.
