Laurel Fern Schultz Nisbet was born to John E. Schultz and Florien M. McClure Hayward and she had a sister Mildred Leone Shultz Taylor (1909-2006). She married Robert Woolsey Nisbet on July 14th 1937 in Hollywood California and they had two children.
Laurel died at age 72 after surviving for 37 years in an iron lung (similar to this photo De & Doreen Wiltse) after being stricken by polio in 1948. She was paralyzed from the neck down but still managed to oversee the household. She is credited by the "Guiness Book of World Records" as the longest survivor of the respirator.
