2 Leon Labrack Biographies

Attended Cushing Academy. His earlier years were spent providing a home for his step-mother and half-brothers and sisters. His WWI Draft Registration Card dated September 12, 1918 at Gardner, Mass. shows him residing on Center Street, South Ashburnham and working at W. F. Whitney Co.; description: short height, medium build, blue eyes, black hair. He became superintendent of W. F. Whitney Co.* in So. Ashburnham, MA where he met Florinthe, who worked in the rush (cane) seating dept. His WWII Draft Registration card dated April 26, 1942 (serial #U630) shows him residing at Pleasant Street (was the old Littleton Road--house directly across tracks up the hill from the B&M railroad station), Whitefield, N.H. (mailing address P.O. Bo 225); description: 5'4", 160 lbs., blue eyes, gray hair, ruddy complexion. They moved to Whitefield, NH in 1934 when he was hired as plant superintendent of Mellin & Quincy Co., makers of "Hampshire House" maple and birch furniture, where he remained until it burned on Sunday, September 19, 1954. (The Mellin & Quincy furniture factory was started in May 1933 by Carl F. Mellin and Knight Quincy {they leased the remaining buildings of the old Brown Co., subsequently the Bernard Tannery}. In 1936, the company was purchased by Samuel Handel and Simon T. Shifman. (Simon Shifman's brother--Joseph H. Shifman--was general manager and lived in Whitefield.) Leon and Florinthe bought the James E. Baker homestead at 26 Elm Street, Whitefield, NH on July 5, 1945 from Nellie G. Baker. They were ninth cousins, but totally unaware of it. They share Jean-Francois Guyon (1592-1663) and Mathurine-Madeleine Robin as common ancestors--he through Barbe Guyon and she through Marie Guyon.
Leon Labrack was born on September 1, 1884, and died at age 76 years old in May 1961.
