He had many siblings inlcuding a brother Howard Thomas Maddy (1922-2010) and a sister Margaret Myrtle Maddy (1929-2005). He grew up in Portland, Multnomah, Oregon and later moved to Ronald, King, Washington, USA in the 1940's. Lester Maddy enlisted in the United States Army on April 19, 1943, during World War II as a Private in the Selectees (Enlisted Men) component. He had worked as a general farmhand before enlisting in the military. He was assigned to the Army on April 26, 1943. He served for nearly three years before being discharged on February 19, 1946. He was discharged as a Private, which was his rank at the time of his enlistment.
